San Cristóbal is not known for its cuisine, but you can eat well at several restaurants. For baked goods, try the Panadería La Hojaldra, Insurgentes 33 (tel. 967/678-4286). It's a traditional Mexican bakery that's open daily from 8am to 9:30pm.

Coffeehouses -- Because Chiapas-grown coffee is highly regarded, it's not surprising that coffeehouses proliferate here. Most are concealed in the nooks and crannies of San Cristóbal's side streets. Try Café La Selva, Crescencio Rosas 9 (tel. 967/678-7244), for coffee served in all its varieties and brewed from organic beans; it is open daily from 9am to 11pm. A more traditional-style cafe, where locals meet to talk over the day's news, is Café San Cristóbal, Cuauhtémoc 1 (tel. 967/678-3861), between Hidalgo and Insurgentes. It's open daily 7:30am to 10pm, Sunday from 9am to 9pm.
